Wolfcraft Snap-Off Blade Knife - for modelling storage bins
2024-12-09
I made a reasonably accurate model of this knife 1 for creating holders, bins, Gridfinity trays etc. The body can be used as a tool in a combine operation.

Gridfinity inserts for Bosch L-Boxx Mini
2024-10-05
The models described here are available at https://www.printables.com/model/1101960-bosch-sortimo-l-boxx-mini-gridfinity-lid-insert-wi.
I added a Gridfinity baseplate and lid insert to some L-Boxxes. I glued a 2 mm thick foam padding on the top insert to create a perfect seal around the edges of gridfinity boxes. This way even the smallest parts will stay in place under all circumstances. The design accomodates 5u tall boxes.
The baseplate was downloaded from Printables 2. The lid insert was designed by me, but I used the inner volume module of the L-Boxx mini also downloaded from Printables 3.
The foam padding is leftover from laminate floor installation. I cut it and glued it with silicone glue using a helper jig I also designed for this task. The process is a little fiddly, so I'm not a big fan of it. Maybe the top lid insert should be thickened, so that it creates a tight seal even without the foam insert. The remaining space between the top insert the the upper edge of the boxes is a user defined parameter in my Fusion file.
Fractal Design Define C airflow mod
2024-09-27
I used to be an avid reader of the old https://silentpcreview.com. The new site is not at all what it was before the original owner, Mike Chin, sold it.
Back then it was a meticulously executed quest to find the receipe for silent, high power PCs. Mike did take silent literally, the goal was to build computers, such that you can't tell if they're on or off. He experimented with everything and carried out loads of measurements in a very quiet anechoic chamber that he built himself.
As far as I can tell he cracked the code before anybody else. Back then most enthusiasts thought that in order to have a quiet computer, you needed to put stuff like bitumen and foam in your PC case and close off any opening, so that sound has no way of escaping.
He showed that this was completely wrong. Components need adequate cooling provided by sufficiently high airflow. The solution is to provide this airflow while generating the least amount of sound. And to do that you need to remove all obstructions in the path of the flowing air.
It's also worth noting that there is no way of keeping fine dust out without completely killing the airflow, which high power components will simply not tolerate.
So, cases like the Define series are kind of a dead end. We know this now. In 2024 most PC cases are airflow oriented and mostly in service of quiet. But my case, which until now I used with the front panel completely removed, needed a mod.
So I cut two 14 cm sized square hole on it with an oscillating tool, and glued in some fan grills designed by myself in Fusion. I tried to add a little flair, so the grid doesn't look completely regular.
